Compression Socks for Swollen Ankles at the End of the Day
You know the signs. Shoes that fit fine at breakfast feel snug by dinner, and your socks leave a deep ring just above the ankle bone. After hours upright, or sitting with your feet down, fluid drifts to the lowest point it can reach, and the ankles are usually where it shows first. Warm weather, long drives and busy days on your feet all make it more obvious.
Many people with that kind of everyday ankle puffiness wear graduated compression socks. On ours, the pressure is firmest right at the ankle, 15-20 mmHg, and eases off up the calf, so the tightest part of the sock sits exactly where the swelling collects. Pull them on in the morning, before your ankles have had a chance to puff up.
Ankle swelling that's sudden, on one side only, painful, red or warm, or that arrives with shortness of breath, needs a healthcare provider promptly. So does swelling that's still there after a night's sleep.
The ankle is where fit matters most, so measure it along with your calf and check both against the sizing guide. If your feet puff up more than your ankles, see compression socks for swollen feet. Every pattern, from the made in the USA styles to stripes and skulls, shares the same graduated fit; see them all in compression socks.
FAQs
Why do my ankles swell at the end of the day?
Mostly gravity. After hours upright or sitting with your feet down, fluid settles in the lowest part of the leg, and it usually eases overnight when you're lying flat. Heat, long stretches without moving and some medications can make it more noticeable.
Do compression socks help swollen ankles?
Many people wear graduated compression socks for everyday ankle swelling because the firmest pressure sits right at the ankle. They're best put on in the morning, before swelling builds. They don't change the reason your ankles swell, so swelling that keeps coming back is worth raising with a healthcare provider.
Are ankle-length compression socks enough for swollen ankles?
Over-the-calf socks carry the graduated pressure from the ankle up through the calf, instead of ending in a band just above the ankle bone. That's why all of our compression socks are over-the-calf.
Can I wear compression socks all day for swollen ankles?
Yes, 15-20 mmHg graduated socks are made for all-day wear. Put them on in the morning and take them off at bedtime. If they leave deep marks, pinch or cause numbness, recheck your size or stop wearing them.
