"Ran a little too hard one week and my MCL was strained so bad I couldn’t walk. Ordered these, wore them every day for a month to work (construction). I could immediately tell a difference when I put them on. I wear them when I run now and I love these things."

"I bought this for my daughter who is a D-1 soccer player who recently sprained her MCL and she loves the support the sleeve gives her."

"I tore my MCL and ACL and using this sleeve helps ease the pain as I recover. Definitely worth the money."

Finding the Right MCL Knee Brace

The MCL (medial collateral ligament) runs down the inside of your knee, connecting the thigh bone to the shin bone. Its job is to stop the knee from buckling inward. It usually gets hurt when something hits the outside of the knee or you plant and twist: a bad landing, a tackle (see our football knee brace), a ski edge that catches. The result is pain along the inner knee and a joint that feels like it could fold the wrong way.

An MCL knee brace adds side-to-side stability so the ligament isn't handling all of that inward stress on its own. Which one you need comes down to how bad it is.

Mild strain: Compression Knee Sleeve

If the knee is sore but stable, start with the Compression Knee Sleeve. Knitted compression and a patella-shaped silicone gel pad give the joint a snug, supported feel, and it's slim enough to wear under jeans.

Moderate instability: Knee Brace with Springs

When the knee feels wobbly on cuts, pivots or stairs, the Knee Brace with Springs adds flexible stabilizers on both sides for more lateral support without locking you up. It's built for moderate instability and ACL/MCL recovery. See all spring knee braces.

Serious injury or post-injury: Knee Brace with Hinges

For a bad sprain, a suspected tear or rehab after surgery, the Knee Brace with Hinges is our most supportive brace. Rigid bilateral hinges hold the knee in a safe range of motion, and they're removable, so you can drop to compression-only as you progress. If you think the ligament is torn, get it checked by a healthcare provider before you pick a brace. Browse hinged knee braces.

Larger thighs: Big Bones Knee Brace

If standard sizes cut in or roll down, the Big Bones Knee Brace is cut wider with a flared top, plus side springs and support stays, and fits thighs 23 inches and up.

Cold therapy after activity: Ice Sleeve

After activity, the Ice Sleeve wraps cold therapy and compression around the knee, hands-free. More in our ice sleeves collection.

Knee injuries rarely stay in one lane. If the meniscus, ACL or PCL is involved too, see our knee braces for a meniscus tear, ACL knee braces and PCL knee braces. For knee pain that isn't a ligament injury, see our knee braces for pain.

FAQs

What is the best knee brace for an MCL sprain?

It depends on how bad the sprain is. For a mild sprain where the knee still feels stable, a compression knee sleeve is usually enough. If the knee feels loose or wobbly side to side, step up to a spring knee brace, and for a severe sprain or a knee you can't trust, a hinged knee brace gives the most support. A healthcare provider can tell you which grade of sprain you're dealing with.

Should I get a hinged brace or a sleeve for my MCL?

A compression sleeve has no side structure, so it suits mild strains and everyday wear once the knee is stable. A hinged brace has rigid hinges on both sides that help limit the inward buckling that stresses the MCL, which makes it the pick for serious injuries and rehab. The spring brace sits between the two. Our hinged brace's hinges are removable, so it can step down to compression-only as you improve.

Can you walk or play sports in an MCL brace?

Yes. Our MCL braces are made to be worn while you move, with a non-slip silicone lining that keeps them in place, and the hinged and spring braces are built for high-impact activity. Whether you should be back on the field or the board yet depends on the injury, so follow your healthcare provider's or physical therapist's timeline.

What brace should I wear for an MCL tear?

A suspected MCL tear should be checked by a healthcare provider before you choose a brace. They can tell you how serious it is and how much movement to allow. If bracing is part of the plan, the Knee Brace with Hinges is our most supportive option: rigid bilateral hinges hold the knee in a safe range of motion, and the product is designed for ACL, MCL and LCL injuries and post-surgery rehab.

What is the difference between an MCL brace and an ACL brace?

The MCL runs along the inside of the knee and resists inward buckling, so MCL bracing is mostly about side-to-side support. The ACL sits inside the joint and controls forward sliding and rotation of the shin. In practice there is a lot of overlap: our hinged and spring braces are both designed for ACL and MCL recovery, and the right one depends more on how severe the injury is than on which ligament it is.
