Compression Socks for Running, From the First Mile to the Cooldown

Every stride lands on your feet and loads your calves, and over a long run that adds up to legs that feel heavy well before the last mile. That's why a lot of runners pull on knee-high compression socks for training runs and race day, then leave them on for the rest of the day.

These are 15-20 mmHg graduated compression socks: the pressure is highest around the ankle and steps down as it climbs the calf. That supports circulation while you're moving and leaves your legs feeling less tired afterward. Underfoot you get arch support plus a cushioned footbed, and the over-the-calf length covers the whole calf, which is where most runners feel a long run first.

Socks or sleeves?

A compression sock covers the foot, ankle and calf in one piece. A shin or calf sleeve stops at the ankle, so your usual running socks stay on. If you're attached to the socks you already run in, compare our compression sleeves for running. And if your shoes feel flat by mile five, pair the socks with running insoles.

Getting the fit right

A running sock should feel snug from the first step without pinching behind the knee or bunching at the toes, because a wrinkle that's nothing at mile one is a hot spot by mile eight. Look up your size on the sizing guide first, then pick a design (stripes, skulls, solids) from our full compression socks range.

FAQs

Do compression socks help with running?

Many runners like how their legs feel in them, both on the run and afterward. Graduated compression supports circulation below the knee and helps legs feel less tired. Think of them as gear that supports your legs, not a substitute for sensible training and rest days.

Should I wear compression socks during or after a run?

Either works, and plenty of runners do both. Wearing them on the run gives your calves a snug, supported feel mile after mile. Keeping them on afterward is a comfortable way to get through the rest of the day on tired legs.

How tight should running compression socks feel?

Snug and even, with the most pressure at the ankle and a bit less at the calf. They shouldn't pinch, leave deep grooves or slide down behind the knee mid-run. If they do, recheck your size on the sizing guide, because the wrong size changes how the graduated compression sits on your leg.
